Case studies
Devon Air Ambulance Trust - High Profile Local Charity
Outcome:
Over a four year consultancy project this high profile Devon charity was helped to become viable and then to
prosper. Income was taken from £850,000 to more than £2 million, and the cash position was taken from
borrowings of £500,000 to reserves of over £1 million. The result for the people of Devon was a strengthened
service, longer flying hours and a new, larger helicopter.
Summary:
Azimuth was invited to help turnaround Devon Air Ambulance when it was running a deficit and at risk of closure.
The initial 'turnaround' plan focussed on short term generation of cash and cutting costs. In parallel, a
longer term strategy was developed based on research and segmentation of the market followed by a comprehensive
marketing communications campaign involving press, TV, radio, PR and advertising. A management team was formed
and extensive support was provided in managing the many changes that were needed to turn the organisation
around.
Burts Chips Ltd - Premium Snack Food Manufacturer
Outcome:
During a consultancy project with Azimuth, sales have increased from £500,000 to over £2 million, the plant has
been taken to capacity and the brand has been acknowledged as a market leader nationwide.
Summary:
Burts Chips was a profitable small business supplying a niche market. Its new owner/managers realised that it
had potential to become a significant player in the UK snack market. They asked Azimuth to help them develop a
plan to grow the business in profitable sectors and establish them as a premium brand. A strategic plan was
developed with clear goals for sales, marketing, manufacturing and finance.
Regular support was provided to help with 'growing pains' including effective financial control with particular
emphasis on managing cash, building a management team, introducing new procedures and planning the move to a new
factory.
Eclipse Internet - Internet Service Provider
Outcome:
Over a three year period with Azimuth, turnover was taken from £2 million to £10 million, and profitability
maintained at 11%. At the start of the project the business was valued at about £500,000. At the end of the
project the business was sold for £12.5 million.
Summary:
Eight years after founding Eclipse the Directors were faced with numerous opportunities to grow their business
but were unsure which way to go. Azimuth helped them develop a plan which gave a clear direction for the
business. Support was then given to re-structure the organisation, develop a management team, and formalise
procedures. With the team focussed, and management of the daily routine effectively delegated, Azimuth attended
monthly meetings to help the top team concentrate on managing people and resources to achieve the planned
growth.
